SBRF teams up with Island View Catering & UCSB Apartment Living Department to make the 2009 UCSB Rowing End-of-Year Banquet a Success!

After some question of whether UCSB would have the budget to support the annual end-of-the-year banquet; SBRF, Island View Catering, and UCSB Apartment Living Department teamed up to help the UCSB Rowing Team provide rowers, family members, and distinguished guests with a memorable evening and delicious spread in celebration of another successful year. SBRF would like to extend sincere congratulations to the Legacy Award recipient, graduating seniors, and all of the rowers on a terrific year and we look forward to you joining our organization.

Local Rowing Update – The UCSB Rowing Team competed in Oak Ridge, Tennessee this weekend at the American Collegiate Rowing Association National Championship Regatta. Congratulations to the women’s varsity four, novice eight, and novice four for advancing and finishing strong at grand finals in their respective races. We’d also like to extend a great congrats to the men’s varsity pair who advanced to petites and the men’s novice eight that finished out the season with a win in the petite finals race. Thanks for a great season!

Local Rowing Update – Thanks to the gracious donations from alumni and parents and the organization efforts of SBRF, the UCSB Rowing team and supporters found catered food, beverages, and protection from the rain at Gold River at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta. Though the weekend was without sunshine and heat, it was not without great racing as UCSB’s women’s varsity four, eight, and second eight swept the petite finals along with the men’s varsity pair. The highlight for the team came from the women’s second novice eight who took home the bronze! Way to go Gauchos!

Local Rowing Update – The UCSB Men’s rowing team achieved their first victory in the most recent addition to their fleet, the “Aaron and Steve Raznick.” The win appropriately took place at their home course at Lake Cachuma. The home-course advantage seemed to pay off as the men’s crew proved to be better prepared for the small waves, bass boat wake, headwind, and cold conditions that Cachuma had to offer in the morning. The men’s first victory in the Aaron and Steve Raznick set a great standard of speed as they finished 20 seconds ahead of Loyola Marymount University’s novice eight! Keep up the great work, UCSB men!

Local Rowing Update – UCSB men’s and women’s crews performed strongly yet again in Newport Harbor against upcoming WIRA and ACRA competitors. Despite rowing against an outgoing tide and a slight headwind, the men’s two novice eights both finished in third at the Newport Invitational. The UCSB women raced UC Irvine, Long Beach State, and Chapman University in their final tune-up before the WIRA championships and pulled out three victories in the varsity eight, novice eight, and second novice eight races and three second place finishes in the varsity four, novice four, and novice lightweight four races. Keep up the hard work Gauchos!

Local Rowing Update – The Santa Barbara Rowing Foundation was proud to sponsor the alumni tent at this year’s San Diego Crew Classic. It was a sunny and slightly windy weekend enjoyed by alumni, parents, and rowers alike. The racing-filled weekend ended favorably with the UCSB women’s open eight and second novice eight placed fourth in grand finals and the men’s crews advancing and excelling to petite finals in their respective races. Thanks to all who were able to attend, hope to see you next year!

Local Rowing Update – The UCSB Rowing Team’s season opener at Newport Harbor proved to be a strong start to what hopes to be a great racing season. The Gaucho second novice eight won one race while women’s varsity fours and men’s novice eight all earned second-place finishes in their respective races against UC Irvine (host), UC San Diego, Long Beach State, University of San Diego, Chapman College, and Mills College. Great work Gauchos!

UCSB Rowing in partnership with SBRF hosted the 45th Anniversary UCSB Rowing Reunion

What more can be said, it was great to see everyone who attended the reunion. Many thanks to Mike Homes, UCSB Rowing Director and Varsity Women’s Coach, for his tireless work in bringing the event together and for opening up the boathouse to us old-timers so that we could relive memories. It was a pleasure to meet members of the current team and we wish them continued success in their spring racing season.

SBRF Sponsors UCSB Rowing Team BBQ

With a new round of freshly-recruited novice rowers joining the team, SBRF helped to welcome freshman to the team by sponsoring an all-crew BBQ. Varsity and novice men’s and women’s crews met on a sunny afternoon to play volleyball, tag football, and enjoy some Island View Catering while exchanging rowing stories and embracing the opportunity to have some off-the-water bonding time. It was great to meet the new class of rowers and we look forward to supporting your efforts over the next four years!

Local Rowing Update – Congratulations to both the Varsity Men’s Lightweight Four and Varsity Women’s Eight for taking home bronze medals at their respective nationals’ races.

The Varsity Men’s Lightweight Four had a strong showing at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, PA battling strongly and finishing just behind Mercyhurst and Brock to ultimately take home the bronze. Meanwhile, the Varsity Women’s Eight finished their season at the American Collegiate Rowing Association’s inaugural national’s race in Oklahoma City, OK and recovered from a crab in the last 500 to walk away with some hardware.

Great job varsity crews!
